eBay is Hoping to Revamp Window Shopping With It’s New Acquisition of Social Shopping Site Svpply

New Addition to the Ebay Family

Window shopping is one of the oldest past times around and eBay is hoping to revamp this leisure activity with its new acquisition of Svpply, a New York-based online startup that brings together shoppers, tastemakers and merchants onto one site by providing a curated selection of fashionable merchandise from around the Web.

For a while now, eBay has included recommendations of similarly viewed or bought items but was looking to expand personalization efforts with PayPal, and invest in data mining capabilities. With the acquisition of Svpply’s assets, including a team of six designers and developers, eBay will now gain access to technology talent to continue to expand the shopping and selling experience for its customers.

Co-founded by Vimeo designer Zach Klein, Eric Jacobsen, Ben Pieratt , Svpply has raised $550,000 from Spark Capital, SV Angel, Dennis Crowley, Jason Hirschhorn and Founder Collective.

Users on Svpply.com keep track of products they like and based on their social networks and display galleries of items they want or own as they discover products from other users. The galleries of products replicate the feeling of window-shopping online giving Svpply members a social, curated and personalized experience.

Svpply.com employees will work on merchandising, non-search discovery and browsing and continuing to build from the recent acquisition of Hunch, eBay is now creating a presence in New York City, with a state-of-the-art technology development center.  Their New York employees will work on technology projects across eBay, including data analysis, personalization and other specialty areas. As eBay continues to expand its web presence in the shopping sphere online, the web will now see yet another innovation that tries to make shopping easier for customers and with the acquisition of Svpply.com and its team they will now be able to successfully do that.
