International News: ZaoZao, the New Crowdfunding Platform in Asia
Helping Independent Designers Market Their Products
ZaoZao, a Hong-Kong based crowdfunding platform geared towards designers in Asia, has just launched recently. With the rise of Kickstarter, crowdfunding has grown to be a popular method for designers to market their products and obtain the funding that is needed to start production. ZaoZao operates the same way as Kickstarter, where shoppers can find interesting designs and choose to fund the project by placing pre-orders. The funding needs to achieve its target goal within a certain time period in order for production to occur. If it doesn’t, then the project discontinues.
Anyone can upload their designs and profiles on the website, but only the better ones are selected to be featured. The chosen designs are on the site for a limited time and quantity. Items can be browsed by designers, categories, recently added products, and featured selections. All the prices are in USD, and dollar signs are not included as a psychological strategy to encourage more spending.
After trying ZaoZao for the first time, I found the site to be very simple and easy to navigate. Registration was also a quick and easy process. However, some items weren’t listed under their proper categories. As I was going through shoes, handbags, and accessories, all of these categories were empty. Yet, ZaoZao’s home page showcases items that are supposed to be under these categories. If ZaoZao wants to provide the best experience for both shoppers and designers, it’s in their best interest to fix these glitches as soon as possible.
