Sachin & Babi bring a touch of the Middle East to New York Fashion Week

Sept. 7, 2017 marked the debut of Sachin & Babi’s SS 2018 collection at New York Fashion Week. The collection consisted of 42 looks.

A crossroads of history, cultures and modern trade, Sachin & Babi’s latest collection is inspired by the Middle Eastern market’s energy along with Loulou de la Falaise, the French fashion muse. Exuding eclectic, bohemian spirit, the designer’s goal was to celebrate diversity and the marriage of old world charm with effortless contemporary style.

“The inspiration came from a recent rip to Istanbul, I was very intrigued by the culture and the effects of that on the textile industry there, the ikats, trips to the Grand Bazaar, and the Blue Mosque really spoke to me,” Sachin Ahluwalia said. “We really wanted to bring that journey to this city but with a modern edge to it, making it feel more youthful.”

The pieces use elements of classic evening wear dress including tulle, silks and sequins, combined with unexpected colors and graphic ottoman textiles. Stand out styles include a fuchsia sequin slip dress with a contrast sequin trumpet hemline as well as a saffron taffeta, hand draped, high low parachute gown that closed the show.

Sachin & Babi was founded by Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia in 2009 with the goal of redefining evening wear. The brand is known for being rich in culture and history, it brings the artistry of bespoke clothing to ready to wear.

According to the show notes, the brand gave back to the region of its inspiration by sourcing original ikat fabrics from Turkish artisans and enlisting a local manufacturer to create this season’s shoes.

Sachin and Babi said that they see the future of their company moving towards brand extensions. The brand has added bridal, accessories, including earrings and a handbag collaboration this season and shoes.

“This season is the first time we are doing shoes, that was very exciting,” Ahluwalia said. “They were being made in Istanbul, we were lucky enough to meet with some manufacturers there, we really wanted to contribute to their economy as well.”

This past year has been a big push for e-commerce according to Ahluwalia, who said that after really embracing it well the brand has seen some incredible results.
